Principal welcome address

This college was one of the fourteen Unity Colleges established in 1999 by the Federal Government. The Pioneer Principal

was Haija Ramatu Usman. Due to some logistics issues, academic activities could not start until April 2000.

The College was located at the former site of Sabon-Gari Primary School off Toto Road, Abaji.

The College started with 9 buildings inherited from the Primary School which were renovated to accommodate

Administrative Block, Bursary, 3- classroom Blocks, 3 Hostel Blocks, and a staff room.

The present Green House Hostel was at concrete decking level and was used as College Dining Hall. Beside it, was constructed

a zinc shed( Bacha) that served as a kitchen. The present step “B” Block and Bookshop were used as students’ hostels.

The College started with 9 academic staff including the Principal and 5 non-teaching staff.

The main purpose of creating Federal Unity Schools is the integration and unity of Nigeria as a nation. Another major reason is the training of manpower/work force for the Federal Government.

For the above reasons, among others, the first Federal Government owned school, Kings College, Lagos was founded in 1909 for boys. The second was in 1927 for girls: Queens College, Lagos. As at 2023, there are 112 Federal Unity Colleges in Nigeria.

Federal Government Girls’ College, Abaji Abuja was founded in 1999 along with 14 others. 3 in Abuja alone. Academic activities started on the 2nd May, 2000 on this premises that originally was Sabon Gari Primary school, Abaji. The founding students population was 68. These were the first SSCE graduates of the College in 2005.

There were 4 houses called Blue, Green, Red and Yellow Houses. As the students population increased, there was need for expansion; so, more structures were converted into dormitories and therefore, the reason for the present 6 hostels named Blue (Sapphire), Green (Emerald), Pink (Morganite), Purple (Pearl), Red (Ruby) and Yellow (Topaz). The College has been a full boarding school from inception till now.
